Chapter 13

Once again, Lisa supplied Trinity with tissues. Thelo had accompanied her onto the front lawn, and having the cute little dog jump into Trinity’s lap played a part in shortening her crying jag. When she’d regained her voice, she said, “Wish my heart would realize that this isn’t the end of the world. Travis and I just got into it because he wants me with him...and under his watchful eye...at college on Monday.” She gritted her teeth. “Just makes me madder than a hornet that everyone keeps treating me like a child.”

“Trinity, I’m sorry, but there’s a reason they’re treating you ‘like a child.’” Trinity stiffened, but Lisa continued, “Stop blaming your mother and your boyfriend for not understanding you, when you are the one who’s deliberately keeping them in the dark about why you’re driving to Memphis with me.”

She avoided Lisa’s eyes. “I need to think,” she said, setting Thelo down. “I’m going for a walk. Is all right if Thelo tags along?”

“Sure,” Lisa said. “Do you need his leash?”

“Nah, I’ll stick to the path through the woods.”

Lisa went inside, sat down at the dining room table, and listened to the music emanating from upstairs. Derrick was still on the piano, and Lisa could already detect an improvement in his dynamics. If she’d had even one student like him in Denver, she might never have stopped giving lessons.

Charlotte returned from dropping the twins off on their play date. She gave Lisa a cordial-if-stiff greeting and asked where Trinity was.

“Out walking. She’s a little upset. Her boyfriend came here just a minute or two after you left, and they argued, and he took off again.”

“Oh, dear,” Charlotte murmured and slumped down into the seat next to Lisa’s. “Guess I only managed to shake the hornets’ nest by telling him she was in town. I keep hoping that, between the two of us, we’d be able to convince her to go back to school.”

The woman already believed that Lisa had overstepped her boundaries. Yet everyone seemed to be overlooking a perfectly obvious compromise. “Charlotte?”

“Yes?” Her voice was pleasant, but her eyes, as she met Lisa’s gaze, were not.

Yikes. Why can’t I keep my mouth shut when I know better than to open it? “What if I were to drive Trinity to Oxford today? I could insist that she speak to someone about postponing the use of her scholarship. Maybe all she needs is a semester or two off to get her head straight after...”

Charlotte balled both fists as they rested on the table.

Lisa decided she’d gotten too far into the subject matter at hand to stop. “Trinity could be grieving over her friend Vera Mae’s death. Maybe that’s why she just can’t face going about business as usual at college.”

Charlotte’s expression softened; she tented her fingers over her lips, and her eyes misted. After a pause, she said quietly, “You might be right. How come I never thought of that myself?”

“It’s always easier to see things clearly in someone else’s family.
